Last month, Just Rich from the USA came to Japan on tour and stopped by Goodman Recordings to record two tracks. Rich brought with him the pre-mixed backing tracks, and we recorded vocals over them. Then, I mixed his vocals into the tracks.

To achieve a great mix, we used the API 2500+ hardware bus compressor for the mixbus, followed by a plugin chain using UAD plugins: Pultec EQP-1A & MEQ-5, Ampex ATR-102, and API 560’s transformer. Finally, for mastering, I used the Hitsvilled Mastering EQ, Shadow Hills Mastering Bus Compressor, and the DMG Audio Limitless limiter.

Goodman Recordings uses a sound absorption booth to track recordings. The floor, walls, and ceiling are constructed of a material that captures soundwaves, preventing reflections. This allows me to record the pure, clean sound that the artist is producing. To create a sense of space, we can use reverbs.

My personal favorite reverbs are the Universal Audio Pure Plate for vocals, Hitsville Chamber for nostalgic feelings, and Capitol Chambers for modern sounds. In this recording of USA hip hop artist Just Rich, I created space in the background phrase “Don’t go breaking my heart!” by placing a U47 condenser mic inside the sound absorption booth with Just Rich standing outside the booth belting the classic Elton John line. Then I added a reverb chamber to enhance the feeling of distance.

As a music producer, you know that a great mix is crucial to creating a standout track. One key element that can make or break your mix is the bus compressor you choose to use. At Goodman Recordings, I swear by the API 2500+ Bus Compressor for its unmatched punch and presence.

In this video, I compare the hardware 2500+ with the Universal Audio UAD-2 API 2500 plugin version and no bus compressor. Although the differences are subtle, you can truly feel the impact. (Video editing is not my forte).

As a recording engineer, I’ve worked with many talented artists, including Just Rich. To achieve his desired sound, we relied on the API Select Rack Gear, including the T12 Tube Mic Preamp, SR24 Dual Equalizer, and T25 Tube Compressor.

When it comes to compressing Just Rich’s vocals, we turned to the legendary 1176 and LA-2A compressors. The 1176 provides fast, aggressive compression on the main vocal that adds energy and impact, while the LA-2A’s smooth, transparent compression on the backup vocals helps to even out the levels and add warmth.

For the mix bus, we used the API 2500+ to provide dynamic control and tone shaping to the overall mix. This powerful compressor adds punch and clarity to the mix, making it sound fuller and more cohesive.

Check out this incredible vocal recording by Maiko from Ehime. We used a Neumann U47 FET microphone, along with an API tube preamp, EQ, and tube compressor, and added UAD-2 slap delay and plate reverb for some extra depth. While the backing track is not yet mixed, Maiko’s voice really reminds me of ZARD.
