Creating Space and Distance with Reverb and in the Sound Absorption Booth

Goodman Recordings uses a sound absorption booth to track recordings. The floor, walls, and ceiling are constructed of a material that captures soundwaves, preventing reflections. This allows me to record the pure, clean sound that the artist is producing. To create a sense of space, we can use reverbs.

My personal favorite reverbs are the Universal Audio Pure Plate for vocals, Hitsville Chamber for nostalgic feelings, and Capitol Chambers for modern sounds. In this recording of USA hip hop artist Just Rich, I created space in the background phrase “Don’t go breaking my heart!” by placing a U47 condenser mic inside the sound absorption booth with Just Rich standing outside the booth belting the classic Elton John line. Then I added a reverb chamber to enhance the feeling of distance.

The clip is from the track “Cardo Got Japen” recorded at Goodman Recordings, Tokyo in March of 2023. Original beat by Richie IV.
